The parable of the Vine teaches the necessity of a constant, close relationship between the follower of Christ and Christ, and gives the purpose of that relationship as bearing fruit. Only by remaining close to our Lord can we bear fruit, which results in God’s glorification (v.8). The summary of this chapter is in (vv. 1-8) the Lord deals with the believer’s relationship to Christ. In vv.9-16, the focus is the believer’s relationship to other believers; while vv. 17-27 speak of the believers’ relationship to the world. Our relationship to Jesus is presented first; for if we are abiding in Christ, we will love other believers and experience victory over the hatred of the world.
