Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL)

The Internationals Ministry offers free ESL (English as a Second Language) classes for people looking to improve their English skills while learning more about the American culture. Classes are held from 7-9 pm Mondays at Trinity Church. Trained teachers and tutors lead each of the different levels of classes offered.  Oral and/or written tests are given to students to determine their appropriate level. The Bible is used as a reading or discussion reference in the different classes. Childcare and transportation from Michigan State, as well as snacks, are all provided.  Click Here for ESL Flyer

Pick-up points are as follows:

  • 6:20pm - Owen Hall
  • 6:30pm - Spartan Village Laundry (Middlevale St.)
  • 6:35pm - Spartan Village (W. Crescent St.)
  • 6:45pm - Trappers Cove Apts Office (Bus Stop)

ESL Classes:

1. Beginners and High Beginners
Students learn practical everyday vocabulary, supplemented with activities that reinforce the understanding of the vocabulary. Students do writing exercises and at times read their writings aloud. The curriculum being used is “Window to the World”, which is based on the Jesus Story in DVD and the Christian Literacy Series.

2. Lesson on Basic English Skills
This class includes practice in speaking, listening, reading and improving grammar.

3. Advanced English with Writing
Are your college papers interesting? Are there problems with your grammar? Is your sentence structure falling apart? Do you have any trouble with capitalization or punctuation? This class will help you to be a more creative writer.

4. Conversational/Reading Class
Different levels of English speaking ability will be in each conversation group. Its purpose is to increase listening or speaking ability and reading comprehension. Students bring their questions or topics to discuss with their tutors. Tutors will work with internationals in small groups during the entire class discussing topics of interest to the students. The second hour will be devoted to Bible reading and discussion.
